SupplySafety

A radar SoC runs a 20 GHz VCO that turns microvolts of supply noise into FM, PAs that switch hundreds of mA every chirp, precise IF/ADC circuits and a large digital core, all from a 12 V car battery through an external PMIC. The on-chip power system has three jobs: regulate each domain cleanly (LDOs and the bandgap reference), sequence start-up and shutdown safely, and monitor every rail so that any under- or over-voltage is caught before it corrupts radar data (an ISO 26262 safety mechanism). The overview is in the signal-chain power section; this page goes into the circuits.

Supply tree. The PMIC's buck converters make efficient but noisy rails; on-chip LDOs give each noise-sensitive domain its own clean supply so that no two domains share a regulator. The supply monitor (dashed) watches every rail with an independent reference.

LDO regulator

VIN (e.g. 1.8 V)pass device (PMOS)BandgapV_ref−+gateVOUT→ load, monitorR1R2FBESRC_outI_loaderror amplifier
Classic PMOS LDO. The error amplifier compares a fraction of VOUT (through R1/R2) with the bandgap reference and drives the pass-device gate until they match. The output capacitor and its ESR, the load current and the pass device's own capacitances set the loop's poles and zeros, and therefore its stability.
VOUT = V_ref · (1 + R1 / R2) Dropout: V_DO = I_load · R_on(pass) → need VIN − VOUT ≥ V_DO (+ margin at slow corner, hot) Dissipation: P = (VIN − VOUT) · I_load Efficiency ≈ VOUT / VIN Load regulation: ΔVOUT / ΔI_load Line regulation: ΔVOUT / ΔVIN Loop: dominant pole at the output (1 / R_out·C_out) for PMOS + external C; ESR zero (1 / ESR·C_out) helps phase margin → keep ESR in its allowed range
TopologyHow it worksStrengthWeaknessRadar use
PMOS pass + external C_outError amp drives the PMOS gate; dominant pole at the outputLow dropout, simple, very low noise at low frequencyPSRR falls above the loop bandwidth (≈ 0.1–1 MHz); needs a µF-class pin capacitor; stability depends on ESRIO, bandgap/aux, analog with an external cap
NMOS source follower (cap-less)Pass device as a follower; dominant pole at the gate; small on-chip CFast load transients, good high-frequency PSRR, no pinNeeds gate drive above VIN (charge pump) or more headroomPA/RF rails with Tx load steps, VCO
Cascaded (pre-regulator + LDO)Two regulators in seriesPSRR adds (> 80 dB)More dropout (needs 1.8 V in for a ≈ 1.2 V out)VCO, reference
Digital LDOArray of switched pass devices controlled by a comparator loopWorks at very low headroom, scales with the processRipple and limit cycles; poor PSRRDigital core, SRAM retention
020406080101k100k10M100Mbuck ripple ≈ 2 MHzPMOS + C_outNMOS cap-lessFrequency (Hz)PSRR (dB)
Illustrative curves, not measured data. PSRR is how much supply ripple the LDO blocks. The PMOS LDO is excellent at low frequency but has its weakest point near 1–3 MHz, exactly where buck converters switch; the cap-less NMOS LDO holds its PSRR to much higher frequency. That is why the VCO and RF domains use NMOS or cascaded LDOs, and why buck frequencies are chosen with the radar IF band in mind.

Bandgap reference

Every LDO and every UV/OV threshold is only as accurate as its reference. A bandgap adds a voltage that falls with temperature (a diode's V_BE, about −2 mV/°C) to one that rises with it (a scaled ΔV_BE of two diodes at different current densities, proportional to absolute temperature) so the sum is nearly temperature-independent:

V_BG = V_BE + K · (kT/q) · ln(N) ≈ 1.2 V (CTAT + PTAT) Accuracy after trim: ≈ ±0.5 % Temperature drift: ≈ 10–30 ppm/°C Low-voltage variants output a scaled current or a sub-1 V reference
  • Trim: the bandgap is trimmed first at wafer test (eFuse), because every later trim and measurement depends on it (see the test flow).
  • Two independent bandgaps: one for regulation, one for the monitors. If a single bandgap drifted, the LDO output and its UV/OV threshold would drift together and the fault would be invisible (a common-cause failure).
  • Start-up circuit: a bandgap has a stable zero-current state; a start-up circuit forces it out of that state at power-up, and is itself checked by the POR.

UV / OV monitors and other protections

Window comparator on one rail. The OV comparator trips when the scaled rail rises above its threshold, the UV comparator when it falls below; both thresholds come from the independent second bandgap. Hysteresis stops chattering at the threshold, and a deglitch filter ignores spikes too short to matter, so a real fault is reported quickly but noise is not.
Monitor / protectionWhat it detectsTypical settingAction
UV (under-voltage)Rail below its window: brown-out, LDO dropout, overloadV_nom − 5…10 %, accuracy ±1–2 %, hysteresis 1–2 %, deglitch 1–10 µsFault flag; for core rails, reset
OV (over-voltage)Rail above its window: regulator failure, PMIC fault, short to a higher railV_nom + 5…10 %Fault flag; switch the rail or the chip off to protect oxides
POR / BORSupply too low to guarantee logic state at power-up (POR) or during operation (brown-out)Threshold below the UV level; delay 0.1–10 ms after all rails are validHold nRESET until everything is valid
Over-current limitShort or overload on an LDO output≈ 1.5–2 × max load; fold-backLimit current, flag, avoid thermal damage
Over-temperatureDie temperature too highWarning ≈ 140 °C, shutdown ≈ 165–175 °C with hysteresisReduce Tx duty, then shut down
Monitor self-testA monitor that can no longer trip (latent fault)At start-up, force each threshold past the rail and check the flagISO 26262 latent-fault coverage

Power-up sequencing

VIN (3.3 V)1.8 V railBG / monitors OKLDO enables1.2 V / 1.0 V core, RFPOR → nRESET releasePLL / RF enable (FW)t1t2t3t4t1: 1.8 V validt2: all rails in UV/OV windowt3: POR delay done → reset releasedt4: firmware starts PLL and RF
Illustrative power-up sequence. The chip only leaves reset after every rail is inside its UV/OV window and the POR delay has expired; firmware then brings up the PLL and RF blocks. The reverse order applies at shutdown, so no block is ever biased from a floating or partly powered rail.
  • Why the order matters: an input driven while its own supply is off can back-power the rail through ESD diodes; a core that starts before its IO can drive pins to undefined states; RF blocks enabled before the PLL locks radiate off-frequency.
  • Inrush: charging large decoupling capacitors at start-up draws a current spike; soft-start ramps each LDO to keep inrush and supply droop within the PMIC's limits.

Production test of the power system

  1. Power-rail short check before any supply ramps (see open/short).
  2. Bandgap trim against a precision tester voltage; then each LDO VOUT trim; burn eFuse and re-measure.
  3. Line and load regulation: step VIN and the load (on-chip load switches or tester PMU), measure VOUT.
  4. UV/OV threshold test: sweep each rail slowly with the tester supply and record the trip and release points (threshold and hysteresis); also verifies the deglitch time with short pulses.
  5. POR threshold and delay, over-current limit and over-temperature flag (forced via test mode).
  6. Quiescent current (IDDQ-like) of each LDO and the standby current; outliers go to PAT.
  7. Monitor self-test exercised the same way the firmware runs it at key-on.
